Too often, when we first begin working with a client, we learn that they are taking many supplements – either given to them by another practitioner, suggested by a friend, or because they read about it online. Many of these supplements are a giant waste of money and can even be detrimental to their healing.

9 Reasons your Supplements

Here’s a list of things to watch out for when it comes to supplements:

1 – Other Ingredients

Before taking any supplement, first read the “other ingredients” section to make sure there are no fillers, unnecessary added ingredients, harmful items, or useless ingredients. So often, we find that people are taking supplements that contain added ingredients that are working against them and making things worse. Dyes, fillers, coatings, flavors and a variety of other items are added to supplements. There are so many unnecessary ingredients added to supplements – most of which are to make them for esthetically pleasing. Who cares what the pill looks like, right?

2 – Redundancy

Often we find people taking supplements that overlap or are redundant. For example, we had one client who was taking three different detox supplements when he first met with us. Not only did these different supplements contain many of the same ingredients, they created a “detox overload” situation that was far too difficult for the client’s body, which was part of the reason he was struggling to heal.

3 – No Plan

Many people take supplements with no plan in mind on why they’re taking them, when they can stop taking them, and what the overarching goals are to taking them. Sometimes people have collected these supplements on their own over time, gotten recommendations from friends, or they’ve worked with other practitioners who have recommended supplements – or some combination of all of the above. When taking supplements, you should still have an understanding of why you’re taking them, what they do to help support the body, and what the plan is to eventually eliminating them.

4 – Subpar Ingredients

You’ve probably heard the term: “You get what you pay for.” In the case of supplements, more expensive doesn’t necessarily guarantee good quality, but cheap supplements, well that almost always guarantees subpar ingredients, unhelpful (or even harmful) fillers, and even unsafe production. It is crucial that you use only good quality supplements, from trusted brands, that use tested production practices. For example, have you ever had that unpleasant “fish burp” when taking fish oil? That’s often an indication that the product isn’t good quality. The omega 3s in the fish oil are incredibly delicate and how the fish oil is extracted is just as important as what type of fish is used. If the process uses heat, it can render the oil rancid, which is harmful. Rather than use a safer extraction process, many companies have created a “burpless” pill by simply adding a heavy coating (also often not good quality ingredients) to the product hoping to stop the burping and keep costs down.

5 – Not Necessary

Many times we will ask people why they are taking the supplements they bring us when we first being working with them. Often they don’t know and just took them because a friend suggested it, or they “heard somewhere” that the supplement is “supposed to help with” whatever ailment they have. Sometimes, they’ve been given the supplement by a practitioner, but don’t know why. If you are taking a supplement and don’t know for sure what it’s supposed to do and how it’s impacting you, then it may not be helping at all.

6 – No absorption

This is a big one: if you have a problem with absorption (which is nearly a guarantee for people with symptoms related to autoimmune disease), then you will struggle to absorb nutrients from foods as well as herbs and supplements. The focus should be on healing the gut issues causing the absorption problems rather than simply attacking the symptoms with supplements.

7 – Food Equivalent

It is in your best interest to get the nutrients you need from foods.  If necessary to help support the body beyond food, you can supplement your needs with vitamins, herbs, or other supplemental ingredients. In some cases, when you’re trying to activate a “healing response” you may need “medicinal amounts” of a specific vitamin, mineral, or nutrient that would be nearly impossible to get from food only. But surprisingly, you can get medicinal (healing) amounts from foods. For example, one of the five crucial vitamins/minerals for a healthy thyroid is selenium. Rather than taking a selenium supplement, two Brazil nuts taken daily will deliver enough selenium to help support proper thyroid function.

8 – Guessing

If you heard that your aunt’s friend’s sister’s neighbor used a supplement and had a good response from it, doesn’t necessarily mean that supplement will help you. Or if you’ve read that biotin helps with hair loss and brittle nails, but you don’t know that you have a biotin deficiency and that it’s really the underlying cause of your hair and nail issues, then taking that supplement could be a waste and even harmful. Make sure have a plan and you get to the underlying reasons behind your symptoms. Guessing can be at the least a waste of money and at worst it can make you sicker.

9 – Uneducated Advice

Get your advice from people who understand all the levels of what you’re going through and are educated on nutrition and supplementation. Keep in mind, it’s best to get your nutrients through food and move to supplementation only when food isn’t enough to support your body to heal or maintain health. Your body WANTS it’s nutrition through food, but sometimes, it’s not enough, so supplements may be necessary. Be careful of “health coaches” working for multi-level marketing companies that sell “health supplements” and products and only recommend supplements from their product line. There’s a huge conflict of interest in their recommendations and few are have knowledge, educational background, or experience outside of the training they received on the products they’re selling.

11 Biggest Lab Lies

Here are the 11 Biggest Lab Lies that can get in the way of true healing…

1 – Normal is Healthy
Normal isn’t necessarily healthy. Just because results are common, doesn’t mean they are healthy or optimal. If you are symptomatic, even if your labs show “normal range” your body is communicating that something is out of whack. Labs are simply one piece of the puzzle and aren’t the whole story.

2 – You’re Not Sick Unless the Labs are Out of Range
Just because labs are “normal” doesn’t mean everything is ok. Typically, there are several steps the body goes through including cellular damage, tissue damage, and organ damage before many of the labs would present as “out of range.” The “normal range” for labs is based on 95% of the population. Meaning, that if you are out of range on the high or low side, you are falling into a small percentile of 5% of the general public. What you really want is to be in the “optimal range” to ensure better health over all and most practitioners are only looking at the average range.

3 – Symptoms are Irrelevant
Symptoms are your body’s way of communicating with you. In our fast-paced, go-go-go!, hyper-connected world, the connection between the body, mind, and soul has been ripped apart and the communication is broken. The typical healthcare (sickcare) model relies heavily on labs and medications, but disregards symptoms as a significant piece of the healing puzzle. Go back to basics and listen and really hear what your body is telling you. If it’s showing up with symptoms, it’s communicating with you. Take a beat and listen….

4 – Labs Must Be Rerun Frequently
Labs are simply a moment in time. Running them more often doesn’t necessarily give you better information. It takes a while for symptoms and labs to catch up to each other. Getting more in tune with the body and having a better understanding of what the body is trying to communicate rather than simply relying on labs will have more of an overall impact on health.  We find that most people are so disconnected with themselves and what the body is trying to communicate that they miss obvious signs. Relying more on the communication of the body rather than frequent labs often gives a much better picture of how to shift to give the body what it needs.

5 – Expensive Labs are Better
It’s not the cost of the labs, that’s important, it’s what the labs will tell you about the underlying cause of your symptoms and how the labs are being interpreted.

6 – Only A Doctor Can Run Labs
A certified practitioner can also run labs and in many cases you can run labs on your own. What’s most important, is having a practitioner who can effectively read your labs, interpret information to identify underlying causes, and to see ahead for challenges you may be trending towards so you can head them off before they become an issue.

7 – Chasing the Lab is the Best Way
Labs often make people feel like they’re “doing something” about their symptoms. Unless the right labs are run and interpreted correctly, you won’t get the information you need. “Chasing the lab” means that based on one lab result, you’ve been prescribed medication and then 3-6 months later, your doc will insist on running labs again to see how the medication is impacting your body and if your meds need to be adjusted. Then, every 3-6 months, the lab will be run again to see how the medication is impacting your body. As long as the numbers fit the exact box the doctor wants to see on the lab, then pharmaceutical dosing will stay consistent. It takes awhile for the labs to catch up to the changes in your body. Unfortunately, because you’re medicated, the labs no longer tell the whole story. You need to take into account symptoms and how much your body is pushing back on the foreign substance (medication) that is now in your system. The labs aren’t giving a good account of how your body is doing and if it’s healing.

8 – Diagnosis is More Important than Root Cause
The medical community loves to name things, but they don’t love to dig deep and find the real reason for symptoms and disease. Only when you can uncover the underlying reasons for your symptoms can you stop your challenges and finally get into the right place to heal.

9 – Only A Doctor Can Interpret Labs
Did you know: lab companies have practitioners on staff to help doctors interpret labs. This means your doc is most likely getting outside help and input from other practitioners to interpret your results. Having a specialist who knows what they’re looking for, how to properly interpret your lab results, and how to look for trends (not just what is “out of range”) will help you focus on stopping the underlying causes of your symptoms and disease.

10 – Testing Antibodies Doesn’t Matter
Most docs don’t like to test for autoimmune antibodies because their treatment plan wouldn’t change no matter what the results. When you have autoimmune disease, the body is attacking cells and tissues in the body faster than the body can produce healthy cells and tissues. Doctors are trained to treat the part of the body where the cells and tissues are being destroyed, rather than focusing on the immune system that is creating the attack. When antibodies show high on test, it shows that the immune system is in attack mode, but since most docs don’t focus on the immune system, they don’t feel there’s any reason to run those tests. So, unfortunately, you don’t get the whole story and you don’t know if your efforts are helping to slow or stop the immune system from attacking you and causing damage. As a result, this means that you will not be able to heal.

11 – Food Sensitivity Testing Isn’t Always Reliable
The real issue with food sensitivity testing is:
a. Most practitioners don’t know how to properly interpret the various different food sensitivity test results
b. Even when the results are interpreted correctly, many practitioners don’t use an effective protocol for healing the gut and reintroducing foods.
c. Most practitioners don’t have a solid plan to help you once they have interpreted the results, so most people feel like they are dangling on their own trying to sort through the restrictions and trying to figure it out with no support.

Popular Practitioner

A popular health practitioner (I can’t tell you who it is) is telling people info that is making them sick…

I recently returned from a business conference for health practitioners being lead by docs and practitioners who are incredibly well known on the internet and in social media, and the things they are teaching are well… deplorable.

One of the speakers – the leader of the conference and well-known online health guru – was explaining how important it is to run labs on clients. He listed all the labs he runs on his clients regardless of their symptoms. When I stood up in the crowd and asked why it was necessary to run so many labs on relatively healthy clients, his answer was: “Because labs are a cash cow.”

As a business owner and wellness practitioner, I can absolutely appreciate the need to be profitable. Of course, if you can’t make enough money to stay in business, how are you going to help people, right?

But his answer frankly shocked me. I was expecting him to explain the underlying medical reasoning behind running his ($4,000) “Standard Lab Package” on every client. But that wasn’t the case. His rationale was purely financial, and his mark up was more than 4 times the actual lab costs.

He proceeded to tell us that the goal, was to find something – anything – on the labs that was “out of range” and then upsell the patient into a lengthy wellness program which included an on-going regime of white labeled supplements costing the client about $250-$400 a month, in addition to the labs (run twice a year at $4000 each time), and in addition to the regular office visits.

What was frustrating me the most wasn’t the cost of the labs, supplements, or office visits. It was that the labs and supplements WERE NOT necessary for the client to be healthy.

The other advice we got at the conference was to focus all marketing efforts on people who were afraid of getting sick, rather than people who were already sick. According to the conference leaders, people who were fearful were more likely to spend money and since they weren’t already sick, they really wouldn’t need to see dramatic results to feel like their plan was working.

Wait… what?

Right. I was just as angry as you probably are right now.

In fact, I was super angry because I looked up to many of the practitioners who were speaking over those two days. I was excited to be part of this larger group of people providing wellness and health advice to the millions of people who need it. And in one afternoon, my excitement was turned to disgust.

So, here’s why I’m telling you this: You deserve to know what is going to help you get better! Not all practitioners are bad. And here’s how you can tell:

1 – Are they running labs on you FOR A REASON which will uncover a root cause or give you insight into your specific issues so you know HOW to fix them? Or are they hitting you with a “routine” barrage of labs to monitor medications and supplement needs?

2 – Do they have a “one size fits all” approach to healing or is it personalized to you?

3 – Are they experts who understand exactly what you’re going through or will they take on any client waving money at them?

4 – Do they use scare tactics, or do they help educate you to understand what’s going on?

5 – Do you resonate with them and their approach?

6 – Is part of your wellness strategy a regimen of monthly supplements with no end in sight?

7 – Do they address nutrition through food (not just supplements)?

8 – Do you feel you will get the support you need to find totally health physically, mentally, and emotionally?

Warning Signs

1 – You are worse off than when you first started taking it.

Have your symptoms gotten worse (or haven’t changed) since you started taking your medication? Is your dosing going up? Are you taking additional medications? If you are worse off, then your medications are definitely hurting you.

2 – Unstable dosing

Is your doctor or practitioner having difficulty figuring out what dosage is right for you? When your dosing is bouncing all over the place it’s because your body is fighting the pharmaceutical and trying to do its job! This is your way of talking to you and telling you that the medication isn’t what it needs and there’s something else that you haven’t uncovered, yet.

3 – Are new symptoms appearing?

Since you began taking the medication are new symptoms showing up? Medications don’t discriminate. In other words, they don’t care what part of your body they are supposed to impact, they will have an affect on the entire body including your liver, kidneys, brain, heart, gut, and central nervous system. Even if your new symptoms don’t seem related, they may absolutely be a RESULT of the medication you are taking. Double check the side effects of the meds and make sure you aren’t making things worse.

4 – Root Cause

What is the purpose of the medication? Has it been prescribed to DESTROY the root cause of your symptoms so the body can get back to balance, or is it just supposed to squash the symptoms? Has your practitioner even talked to you about the underlying REASON for your symptoms, or have you only been given a diagnosis and handed a prescription. In rare cases, medications are needed to stop a true underlying root cause, otherwise, most meds are there just to temporarily hold back symptoms – which doesn’t help you heal.

5 – Is There A Plan?

What plan does your doctor have to get you OFF the medication? Again, in rare cases, medications may be necessary, but it should be a temporary fix and there should ALWAYS be a plan to wean you off the medication and support the body so it gets what it needs to heal.
